A continuously developing organisation Lundbeck is a continuously developing company. Growing international competition and continuing growth in the number of products and markets make heavy demands on the flexibility and adaptability of the organisation. To ensure its future position as a strong partner in the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), Lundbeck is constantly adjusting its structure to market conditions and its own research results. H. Lundbeck A/S is fully owned by The Lundbeck Foundation, which was established in the 1950s by the widow of the companys founder Hans Lundbeck. As a foundationowned company, Lundbeck is in a fortunate position. For many years, The Lundbeck Foundation has allowed the company to invest almost all of its profits in research and development activities, thereby enabling it to pursue narrowly defined long-term strategic goals. In other words, ownership by the foundation has given Lundbeck the necessary space to build up its internationally recognised expertise within pharmaceutical treatment of psychiatric disorders. Sales and marketing Lundbeck being a rapidly expanding company is clearly underlived by the increasing number of subsidiaries. In 1987 the Group comprised only nine subsidiaries, mainly in small European countries, whereas Lundbeck had subsidiaries in 24 countries by the end of 1997 and is now represented throughout Western Europe. Lundbecks expansion into Eastern Europe is also well under way. In 1997 Lundbeck established a subsidiary in Hungary, and in 1998 subsidiaries are planned in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Within a few years, Lundbeck shall have its own subsidiaries in all of Europe. In connection with its expansion into East Europe, Lundbeck has been following the development in Russia closely because the Russian market holds a considerably potential. In 1997 Lundbeck established a subsidiary in Russia, and the activities that have been implemented since then underline the extent of Lundbecks possibilities in this market. An agreement has been concluded with the Serbsky Institute which is a centre for social and forensic psychiatry under the Ministry of Health. The project is to develop scientific research in clinical psychopharmacology with a view to introducing new and more effective drugs for treating psychiatric diseases. In the Far East, the Middle East and Asia, Lundbecks interests are primarily handled by representative offices and local agents. At the present time, Lundbeck has 12 representative offices, with more to come. Thus Lundbeck plans to open representative offices in China and India during 1998. The future Lundbecks strategy is to establish subsidiaries in growth markets all over the world. In 5-10 years time, the subsidiaries will cover other potentially markets in the Far East, the Middle East and South America. A major challenge will be to establish Lundbeck in the USA. In those parts of the world where the Group is not represented, Lundbecks products are marketed and sold through A/S Lundbeck Overseas whose task it is to identify and cultivate new markets. Its activities are controlled from regional offices in the Far East, the Middle East, North Africa and South America. Research, development and production The activities of the company are controlled and coordinated from the Groups headquarters in Valby, a few kilometres from the centre of Copenhagen, where a dynamic and inspiring interplay is created between research and development, pharmaceutical production and administration. Chemical production is sited at the factories in Lumsås, 100 km north west of the companys headquarters, and in Seal Sands near Newcastle in the UK.
