The Lundbeck Foundation Award for Outstanding Research The Lundbeck Foundation, which makes substantial donations every year to research projects at Danish universities and other institutes of higher education, is the sole owner of H. Lundbeck A/S. Grete Lundbeck, widow of the companys founder, established The Lundbeck Foundation in the 1950s with funds from her private assets. This year, The Lundbeck Foundations Award for Outstanding Research of DKK 300,000 has been awarded to Professor Thue W. Schwartz of the Panum Institute, Copenhagen University. Professor Schwartz has been awarded the Research Prize for his outstanding research within molecular pharmacology. Molecular pharmacology is understanding how drugs act on the molecular plane, how they are recognised by their receptors, and how they either stimulate or block the function of the receptors. Throughout his scientific life,Thue W. Schwartz has worked with peptides (small proteins) that function as chemical messengers - peptide hormones and neuropeptides. We have known about these peptides for more than 20 years, but it is only in the last couple of years that we have succeeded in developing effective pharmaceuticals that can imitate or block the peptides function. Describing the molecular mode of action of these new, so-called non-peptide pharmaceuticals has been one of Thue W. Schwartzs most important scientific achievements. Using molecular biological methods, he has among other things mapped binding sites for non-peptide substances. This scientific work has also led to a completely new receptor model for how our largest family of proteins functions and how the proteins are activated and blocked by hormones, transmitters and drugs. In the last couple of years, Thue W. Schwartz and his staff have also used this knowledge to describe how HIV uses receptors to infect cells, and how one can develop new drugs able to block this process. The award to Professor Thue W. Schwartz is the eleventh award made by the Lundbeck Foundation for outstanding research. The prize was established in 1987 in memory of P.V. Petersen, who for many years headed Lundbecks research and development activities. The prize has since been awarded to prominent researchers within scientific and medical fields, including biochemistry, pharmacology, basic biomedicine and neuroscience. In the past 11 years, The Lundbeck Foundation research prize has been awarded to: 1987 P. V. Petersen, M.Sc. Development of psychopharmacological and other medical drugs 1988 Professor Mogens Schou Psychopharmacology 1989 Professor Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen Pharmacology 1990 Professor Erik Strömgren Psychiatry 1991 Professor Lars-Inge Larsson Molecular cell biology 1993 Professor Carl-Gerhard Gottfries Psychiatry and neuropathology 1994 Professor Niels A. Lassen Neurophysiology 1995 Professor Arvid Carlsson Psychopharmacology 1996 Professor Per Andersen Neurophysiology 1997 Research Professor Peter E. Nielsen Molecular biology 1998 Professor Thue W. Schwartz Molecular pharmacology Professor Thue W. Schwartz was awarded The Lundbeck Foundation Award for Outstanding Research in 1998. 36
