Environmental Report 1997 In 1997, Lundbeck continued developing a health, safety and environmental management system in order to provide management with an effective tool for managing the task of complying with the Groups approved policies. The HSE management system is intended as not just a system of checks and balances, but as a management system that matches Lundbecks management of other areas, such as quality and finance. It is vital that top management has a general knowledge of present efforts and activity levels in order to be able to plan the overall coordination, decide on the level of ambition and respond to external enquiries concerning the companys health, safety and environmental conditions. Lundbeck has the advantage of being largely responsible itself for research in and development of both the companys products and its production equipment and work procedures. It is essential that assessments of health, safety and environmental aspects form part of this work so that problems, if any, can be solved at an early stage. Particular attention must be paid to this aspect in the management system. Throughout 1997, a project organisation worked on the framework and conditions for the system. This work included translating our policies into strategies and specifying the general framework in accordance with management principles in general. Environmental policy Our environmental policy which guides all our activities contains five pillars: We will continuously assess the environmental impact of our activities. We will seek to improve our environmental performance (subject to cost-benefit analyses) - by using environmentally sound processes and cleaner technology - by making optimal use of raw materials and energy - by reducing emissions from our facilities. Environmental requirements must be complied with before our production objectives can be regarded as met. We will be as open as possible about environmental aspects in our cooperation with authorities and the local community. We will provide our employees with the necessary training to ensure that they act in an environmentally responsible way and comply with in-house and external environmental requirements. Health, safety and environmental strategies The basis for the strategies is that, in order to comply with the policies, active management of HSE activities is necessary to ensure that problems are solved or dealt with in a systematic and qualified way. This must be done in a clear and well-defined organisational framework, and any action must be properly planned. Problems are best solved where they are caused. It is therefore important that health, safety and environmental tasks operate at the local level in an interaction between management and employees across the organisation and with support from expert functions. Successful interaction depends on effective communication, follow-up and adjustment. The elements of the strategies will be amplified in actual targets and action plans in connection with the phased implementation of the strategy, which will commence in 1998. Health & safety policy Lundbeck will do its utmost to ensure that work activities do not harm employees, either physically or mentally. Lundbeck regards compliance with working environment legislation as a minimum requirement that does not in itself fulfil the aim of our health & safety policy.
