Comments on the accounts Costs Lundbecks total costs, exclusive of financial items and tax, were DKK 3,327 million, an increase of 17% on 1998. Research and development costs rose to DKK 824 million, an increase of 33% compared with 1998. In 1999, research and development costs accounted for 20% of turnover against 19% in 1998. This strong growth is in accordance with the Groups objective of strengthening its pipeline by expansion of the Groups own research and development activities and through cooperation and inlicensing agreements. The most important activities behind the increase include a new research and development agreement with Cephalon, Inc., an agreement with Novo Nordisk A/S on sharing research technology and a development and marketing agreement with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. In addition, research and development costs increased as a result of comprehensive phase III studies of the S-enantiomer of citalopram, which were initiated as scheduled in August 1999. A total of eight phase III studies are conducted in USA, Europe and Canada. The total number of patients involved is 2,350. Lastly, Lundbeck greatly expanded and strengthened its own research and development organisation in 1999. Production costs were DKK 794 million, an increase of just 4% on 1998. The development in production costs is affected by the inclusion of a DKK 34 million writedown of Serdolect® stocks in the 1998 accounts, and by the fact that the 1999 accounts do not include the production costs of non-CNS products transferred back to Byk Gulden. These products were characterised by having a relatively low contribution margin. If the 1998 figures are adjusted for these facts, the growth in production costs from 1998 to 1999 was 11%. Distribution costs were DKK 1,038 million, up 14% on 1998. The increase is due to the stronger efforts to market Cipramil® in a number of major European markets and in Canada and Australia. Administration costs went up by 18% to DKK 675 million as a result of expansion of the capacity of the sales subsidiaries and, to a minor degree, the reinforcement of central corporate functions within corporate communication, human resource management and IT. Financial items In 1999, the Group had net financial income of DKK 64 million, about the same level as in 1998. Of the net income, DKK 16 million, against DKK 38 million in 1998, was net interest income and market value adjustments of cash equivalents and bonds. Compared to 1998, market value adjustments were adversely affected in 1999 by falling prices in the Danish bond market.
