Increasing consumption of raw materials Our consumption of both solvents and other raw materials rose in 2000 in relation to 1999 by 37% in the case of solvents and by 19% in the case of other raw materials. Other raw materials are mainly hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide. The growing consumption of raw materials is due to an adjustment of the production process for citalopram necessitated by the big demand for this product. On the basis of an environmental assessment and an action plan prepared in cooperation with West Zealand County, a decision was made in 1999 to replace the two air incineration units in Lumsås with the latest technology within air treatment. The replacement was carried out in 2000. Besides reducing risk factors at the site, the new system is resulting in a considerable reduction in energy consumption. The air treatment system was Lundbecks biggest environmental investment in 2000. In Valby, Lundbeck is working on a project for systematic minimisation of the emission of dichloromethane, which is an undesirable substance due to its harmful properties. However, dichloromethane is essential for research and some control analyses. Use of the substance is therefore unavoidable, but the emission can be minimised by various means, including installation of carbon filters on all main ventilation pipes and exhausts. This has been done in the entire research area in Valby and will be done in the new control laboratory building scheduled for completion in Valby in 2002. Water and wastewater In 2000, Lundbecks water consumption amounted to 154,600 m3 a reduction of no less than 35% in relation to 1999. In 1999, a new cooling system that recirculates the cooling water was installed in Lumsås. The first production units were connected to the cooling system in the autumn of 1999 and the rest in the spring of 2000. As a result, the water consumption was reduced by two thirds in relation to 1999. For the town of Lumsås this means more secure water reserves in the future. Water consumption in relation to production in Seal Sands and Valby remained almost the same as in 1999. However, total water consumption for H. Lundbeck A/S as a whole is falling. The reduction in water consumption has resulted in a corresponding fall in wastewater. In 2000, wastewater amounted to only about 158,100 m3 which is 34% less than in 1999. New air treatment technology The emission of organic solvents amounted to 150 tonnes in 2000 6% up on 1999. The atmospheric emission was bigger than normal due to the running in of a new air treatment system in Lumsås. However, it is being kept below the level indicated by the increase in production. H.
