20 approved in 2005, and with this approval Cipralex® will be approved in Europe for the treatment of the three most common anxiety disorders: generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. As part of our strategy, we will continue to study Cipralex®/Lexapros profile in the treatment of other anxiety disorders and, based on clinical studies, continue to expand the indication of the drug. The aim of these efforts is partly to help the many patients who suffer from both depression and anxiety, partly to help the 60 million people in the seven large pharmaceutical markets (France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Spain and USA) who primarily suffer from anxiety disorder. Ebixa® for the treatment of Alzheimers disease Ebixa® is the first and only drug in the world for the treatment of moderate to late-stage Alzheimers disease. Lundbeck has in-licensed Ebixa® from the German company Merz Pharma & Co., GmbH and has acquired the exclusive rights to a number of European countries and to Canada, Australia, South Africa and Asia. In a co-marketing agreement with Merz, Lundbeck has acquired the semi-exclusive rights to the remaining markets worldwide, not including the USA and Japan. Launched in Europe in 2002, Ebixa® is currently available in approximately 94% of the markets in which Lundbeck holds the rights (in terms of market value). In Europe, Ebixa® has in december 2004 gained a market share of 11.9% of the overall market for Alzheimers drugs in terms of market value. In some European countries, Merz markets the same drug under a different brand Axura® and both drugs have attained an aggregate market share in Europe of 18.1%. Ebixa® is Lundbecks first drug for the treatment of Alzheimers disease. Europe, Ebixa® and other memantine market share, N7D % 20 15 10 5 Ebixa® Other memantine Combined memantine Ebixas profile Alzheimers is a disease affecting middle-aged and elderly people. The initial signs are frequent forgetfulness, changes in personality and confusion. Patients subsequently lose the ability to perform everyday activities; disorientation, delusion and language problems set, in the ability to communicate, eat and drink gradually disappears, and at some point, they fail to recognise their loved ones. The disease ultimately progresses into death, most often 5-10 years after the disease has been diagnosed. The drugs currently available in the market to treat Alzheimers disease all offer symptomatic treatment. Overall, there are two groups of drugs: One group consists of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and the other group solely comprises memantine (Ebixa®). Ebixa® has a mode of action different from that of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, as Ebixa® inhibits the abnormal activation of the NMDA receptors and at the same time maintains their normal activation, which is required for normal function. While all the acetylcholinesterase inhibitors are approved for the treatment of mild forms of Alzheimers, Ebixa® is the only drug approved for the treatment of the late stages of the disease. Results from clinical studies show that Ebixa® is effective in treating both early and late-stage Alzheimers disease, featuring a convincing tolerability profile. The number of reported side-effects in clinical studies is comparable to placebo, and Ebixa® is thus a highly tolerable product. The other drugs for the treatment of Alzheimers disease do not have the same favourable tolerability profile. The use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors often involve gastrointestinal sideeffects. 0 2002 2003 2004 Rest of the world, Ebixa® and other memantine market share, N7D % 8 6 4 2 0 Ebixa® Other memantine Combined memantine 2002 2003 2004 Sales of Ebixa® 2004 DKKm Europe Ebixa® Row Ebixa® 1) Constant Exchange Rates 47 10 380% 419% 675 276 145% 145% 2003 DKKm Growth Growth in CER1
