Focused efforts: Environment, health and safety Lundbeck aims to conduct its activities in a way that harms neither its employees nor the local communities in the countries in which it operates. In 2007, Lundbeck increased its production without recording a corresponding increase in its consumption of raw materials, energy and water and also recorded the lowest number of accidents in four years. In addition, Lundbeck has defined a new goal to reduce Lundbecks CO2 emissions by 2016. undbecks development of pharmaceuticals and manufacturing processes is based on chemical synthesis. This means that Lundbecks most significant effects on humans and the environment derive from consumption of raw materials ­ primarily organic solvents, energy and water ­ along with waste production and the emission of solvents into the air. The active ingredients in Lundbecks pharmaceuticals are manufactured at Seal Sands in the UK, Lumsås in Denmark and Padova in Italy. These factories have been certified to the ISO 14001 environmental standard for a number of years. In 2007, this certification was extended to Lundbecks production of finished pharmaceuticals. All Lundbecks production sites now follow the same system in their environment, health and safety initiatives: Lundbecks HS&E1 system, which complies with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Certification of the HS&E system will be completed in 2008 with the inclusion of the remaining areas of Lundbecks Valby headquarters and its research unit in New Jersey, USA. This will conclude a four-year strategic initiative aimed at ensuring that Lundbeck will, also in the years ahead, show a continuing commitment to constantly improve its environmental protection measures and the health and safety conditions offered to its employees. L HS&E strategy 2010 updated Lundbeck aims to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for its employees and take responsibility for its environmental impact. The ambition is to be one of the leading businesses in the field of health, safety and the environment. To put action behind its words, Lundbeck management adopted a focused strategy in 2004 involving ten focus areas as outlined in the figure on the next page. Management is very satisfied to note that the strategy is progressing according to plan. By the end of 2007, halfway through the 2005-2010 strategy period, more than half of the strategys activities had been implemented in the companys day-to-day operations. With the support of management and employees alike, the strategy has helped to ensure significant progress in accordance with the companys health, safety and environment (HS&E) policy. The specific improvements involve a reduced resource consumption, lower solvent emissions, the introduction of routines for environmental assessment of new pharmaceuticals and an evaluation of suppliers with respect to environmental and employee conditions. Also, data compilation and communication about Lundbeck HS&E matters and initiatives have been expanded and improved. One of Lundbecks goals for 2007 was to update Lundbecks HS&E strategy 2010, which will enable the company to continue the positive trends in the years ahead. The updated strategy builds on experience gained and on improved systems for analysis and follow-up. This provides for a more precise analysis of problems, allowing the company to customise more effective solutions. In the years ahead, Lundbeck will use this platform to increase its focus on matters such as HS&E considerations when developing new pharmaceuticals, minimising resource consumption and waste in the business, and implementing Lundbecks CO2 strategy. For all strategy focus areas, Lundbeck has defined clear success criteria to determine when an initiative has been accomplished. Lundbeck has also defined a number of indicators for its impact on people and the environment for inhouse and external benchmarking purposes. Lundbeck intends to use these success criteria and indicators to regularly monitor whether Lundbeck ranks among the leading companies in the HS&E field. Lundbeck defines targets for CO2 emissions Energy, carbon dioxide and the climate are topics that dominate in the media and affect the political debate. Companies and others are expected to take responsibility for their actions and reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible. Lundbeck intends to act responsibly in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Thus, in 2007, Lundbecks Executive Management adopted a long-term CO2 strategy defining targets for reductions in the companys CO2 emissions. As part of this strategy, Lundbeck intends to sever the connection between business growth, energy consumption and resultant CO2 emissions.
