Safer treatment of emissions In October 2007, new laws concerning the treatment of emissions were passed in Italy. For the past three years, Lundbeck Padova has been treating all emissions in the regenerative thermal oxidizer (the so-called RTO) but emissions from the hydrogenation plant were not included because there is a risk of explosion. The treatment of hydrogen requires a particular technology, and there have been accidents with this type of emission in the past. Building a solution requires a lot of attention to the design, and at the end we decided to treat the emission from the hydrogenation plant in our RTO system, says Roberto Nessi, Engineering & Technical Office Manager. We have a system that evaluates the concentration of hydrogen and other solvents. We control every kind of emission very closely, and now all emissions are treated in the RTO. This means we have only one stack, and that makes it easier for the authorities to measure our emissions. Only a very low amount of emission is permitted. Before the RTO was installed in 2004, we had about 10 tonnes, and today we have only a few hundred kilos. Hydrogenation reaction was not commonly used in the past in Lu-PI, so we do not expect a big reduction in air emission, but as a side-effect the improvement program gives us the opportunity to eliminate a possible source of smell. Proud to serve the community In 2007, Lu-PI was asked to prepare a one-day session on chemical risk as part of a training programme for the Padova Fire Brigade. We are pleased and a little proud to serve the community with this kind of activity, because it is part of our duty as Padova citizens, and it helps to improve our already good relationship with the local authorities, says Fabrizio Borin, Production Manager. I started the lesson by talking about the most fascinating organic reaction we have the Grignard reaction. At Lundbeck, this reaction is widely used for the production of one key intermediate in the synthesis of escitalopram. And of course we have extensive experience in managing the reaction in a safe way. After the lesson, members of the Lundbecks in-house fire brigade staged an emergency drill. The drill went very well. The firemen were impressed with the way our internal fire brigade worked and with our emergency devices and procedures, and they were surprised to see that we have much of the same equipment that they use to face this type of emergency. `That means we can come to you and ask for help if we are short of equipment, one of them said. To me this was the greatest recognition imaginable, says Fabrizio. Unique relationship This close co-operation between the authorities and the industry is quite unique. In Italy the laws are made to control the citizens, and the authorities see themselves as `policemen. It is important to understand this to see why it is sometimes difficult to involve the authorities in our activities, explains HSE Manager Andrea Volpato. So our co-operation with the fire department is quite unusual in Italy, and it has taken time to establish it. It was always good, but the real improvement has come in recent years and is attributable to the Lundbeck way of doing things. They appreciate our proactive attitude.
