2007 successes and challenges Full speed ahead on energy savings Reducing energy consumption has been a major focus area for the past three years. About five per cent of our total investments in 2007 were allocated to this area. We have introduced energy saving measures, and at the moment we are monitoring our energy consumption to confirm that the energy saving projects completed in 2007 are in accordance with design results, explains Roberto Nessi, Engineering & Technical Office Manager. Investments were completed in September, so the activities of monitoring the energy consumption began only recently. The preliminary assessment of benefits obtained yielded good results, but it is still too early to talk about the overall effectiveness. We think that we will see an effect by the end of 2008. Our new kilo lab will open, and although it is built with a view to reducing energy consumption (e.g. with a standby mode for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning), we will see an increase in energy consumption, but hopefully not such a big increase. One must not forget that a pharmaceutical site requires a designated area for the production of APIs and air treatment requires a lot of energy. Our first major energy saving effort was aimed at controlling the speed of the cooling water pumps so that they run at full speed only when needed. An automatic speed control system was installed in 2007. Previously the pumps worked at maximum capacity throughout the year. The same kind of improvement was implemented for scrubbers. We have various projects scheduled for 2008. A new air compressor will be installed, which works on demand. The water for the showers in the dressing rooms will be heated by solar panels, and we will also upgrade the HVAC system in the finishing department with a standby mode. These initiatives will allow us to save more energy and will give us more user-friendly systems. Mariano Stivanello, R&D Manager, in the new kilo lab area. More flexibility with new kilo lab A brand new kilo lab is being built at Lu-PI. The facility consists of two kilo labs both classified to the ISO 7 standard and thus suitable for making APIs with proper confinement. In the future, the large lab can also be equipped with an even more confined area (ISO 5) that may be adapted to manufacture special APIs under stricter segregation. For the time being we have no plans to start working with high potency or cytotoxic APIs, but we may have the possibility to do so in the future, says Mariano Stivanello, R&D Manager. The new kilo lab will be a great improvement. Today we share a clean room with the pilot plant, so we cannot work with two different products at the same time. The new kilo labs will provide us with much more flexibility. From an HS&E point of view, one of the main advantages is the confinement. We will have a pressure barrier and an airlock and other measures to prevent crosscontamination both ways. And the operators will of course be wearing standard personal protective equipment. The new kilo lab will become operational at the end of January 2008. Cristina Fuso, HSE Specialist. No problems with new noise limits Work-related noise illness is a growing concern across Europe, so in 2003 the EU made a new directive on noise control. Pursuant to the directive, which came into force in Italy in 2006, companies must repeat occupational noise mappings every three years, and the values have been reduced by 5 db(A). We had to verify our situation in relation to the new limits. We made a new assessment to identify whether any employees were at risk, and we found that the noise exposure is under the lower exposure value for each kind of job. Hearing protection is required in some areas, mainly around the compressors and steam boiler room, says Cristina Fuso, HSE Specialist. We made the required training of all employees to increase the awareness of risks related to noise. The core message is that even a few minutes of loud noise could affect your health, and our workers must wear protection. Riccardo Cabianca (Engineering dept.) with one of the brand new inverters.
