2007 successes and challenges A good environment and a good working environment is crucial for Lundbeck. All work routines are planned with a view to reducing the impact on our employees and the environment from the activities conducted at the site. In the following, managers and employees tell about some of the initiatives they made in the course of the year. Where are the energy users? Energy mapping involved almost everyone at Seal Sands during 2007. The goal is to identify the big energy users and the potential for further savings. We began to look at it last year. We literally went through every energy user on site. We measured at about 320 different locations, Environmental Coordinator Anthony Thomas says. Looking at the different sets we found out that 35,000 GBP per year is spent on electricity in the SMB area (the separation process of escitalopram). We measured every drive, every drier, scrubber, you name it, and then we ranked them in cost order to decide which units to focus on. 63 per cent of production plant P7-related energy costs is spent in ten specific units, so we identified the big energy users. The next step will be to bring in external consultants and how we can reduce our spending in this area. A lot of work has gone into the energy mapping process. But it has been worthwhile, and there has been a big involvement from everyone on the site. Now we can have a fair try at making an energy balance. We have looked at what we spend on energy via the bills, and now we also know where the money is going. GOING FOR THE GOLD Anthony Thomas (left), Philip Jenkins (centre) and Daniel Nolan were proud to receive a ROSPA Award for the second year running. This time they went for and won the Gold Award. New seal solved old problem The D711 agitator is used to stir wet powder in a vessel and help it dry. A hydraulic motor mounted outside the vessel drives the agitator, and the two are connected with a drying shaft. Where the shaft penetrates the vessel, there is a joint called a seal. For many years the agitator seal had caused problems such as leaks and spillage of ethanol, and although the engineers had tried different designs over the years, nothing seemed to work really well. Technically it is a very demanding area from an engineers point of view, Operations Manager Philip Baines says. You have got moving parts, you have got A lot of work has gone into energy mapping. Typically the seal would last two to three months at best, and then we would have to repair it. We spoke to a company that has helped us with a similar problem, and they designed a seal especially for us which was installed in January 2007. Initially it was a failure. We took it apart and found out why it failed. It had been assembled incorrectly. We corrected that, tried again and it ran for six months, which is the longest period we have ever had. We are now working on a new and improved design our aim is to get the seal to last for a full year. The operability has improved greatly with the new seal. Fewer leaks mean less clean-up, a lower risk of inhalation and reduced fire hazard in respect of ethanol. www.lundbeck.com/sustainability Health, Safety & Environment Report 2007, Seal Sands, England Page 3 of 8
