Initiatives at other sites Waste plan paid off Being a major producer of hazardous waste, Lundbeck Research USA, our research unit in the USA, has a duty to present a plan for how the business intends to reduce the volume of waste it produces. This mandatory requirement has made Lundbeck Research investigate ways in which to reduce not only hazardous waste, but also plastic, cardboard and paper waste. Accordingly, an action plan was launched in June 2007 focusing on recycling chemical drums, solvent bottles, cardboard packaging material and foam filling from packaging. The goal is to avoid buying additional drums and foam filling altogether, to significantly reduce expenses for disposing of broken glass, to recycle up to 95 per cent of all cardboard used, and to reduce paper consumption. Any reduction in waste volumes is a benefit to the environment and means that we save money, says HS&E Officer Halim A. Hasan of Lundbeck Research USA. Thomas Erik Holm with a small part of the compounds that have been brought in from the cold. Compounds brought in from the cold When Novo Nordisk and Lundbeck ended a collaboration on the screening of potential compounds for future pharmaceuticals, 250,000 vials with a few milligrams of different crystalline compounds ended up in a coldstorage room under building G1. Not because they required cold storage, but because there was available space here. This group of compounds is pivotal to our research, as it includes more than half of Lundbecks important research compounds, explains Thomas Erik Holm, Head of Research Support Services. The work involved in labelling and registering the compounds in a closed room at 4 degrees Celsius was unpleasant and for some employees almost claustrophobic. Also, it was not a practical method for the scientists who were to use the compounds. It was a logistical nightmare to identify the right shelf, but we didnt know where else to store the compounds when we received them, Thomas says. We were surprised to see how much space 250,000 compounds take up! Now, the so-called Novo group of compounds has been brought in from the cold. A 100m2 room with an ordinary room temperature and ample space is now home to the group of compounds, which has been placed in custom-made cupboards. The process of labelling the compounds with bar codes and registering them in Lundbecks system is proceeding as planned. So far, 100,000 compounds have been registered. As a result of the improved logistics, we can now `pick 100150 compounds per hour from the trays on the shelves, as compared with about 30 before the change was made. The project was more comprehensive and demanding that we had expected, but the relocation of the compounds and bar-code labelling have made the process much more flexible and improved the working environment, Thomas says. Leaflets on demand Lundbeck Pharma at Tåstrup no longer scraps tonnes of printed matter every time they print a new leaflet or make changes to an existing one. From now on, we order only on demand and to the extent possible environmentally friendly products, thereby achieving financial as well as environmental benefits, says Anika Nissen, Commercial Coordinator. The idea of reducing the number of printed matters arose after last years cleanup procedure. Lundbeck Pharma discarded two tonnes of excess campaign material collected over a period of three to four years. www.lundbeck.com/sustainability Health, Safety & Environment Report 2007, Valby, Denmark Page 9 of 12
