2007 successes and challenges We have been extremely busy, says Kirsten Vej. Hectic start for new HS&E group PVC REPLACED WITH CARDBOARD More environmentally friendly cardboard has replaced PVC foil in Lundbecks ampoule packs. The ampoules are now kept in place by a punched cardboard disc, which is folded and glued onto the inside of the box. The change was made when we started to use a new packaging line, in which we also replaced the printing dyes by a more harmless printing ink, says Annabet Rasmussen, Team Leader of the Ampoule Team. Kirsten Vej of Corporate Finance experienced a hectic debut as HS&E representative in a newly established HS&E group. Since she was elected in April, Kirsten and the other group members have been actively engaged in workplace assessments, action plans, emergency drills, internal audit and preparations for the external certification of the HS&E system. We have been extremely busy but managed to sort everything out in the short period, and this achievement was to a great extent attributable to support from our colleagues and from our helpful sparring partners at the administrative network and Corp. HS&E. We even reported two near-miss accidents, and that is a rare occurrence in an administrative function, Kirsten says. The health, safety and environment initiatives have been communicated for example via a website, an electronic newsletter and by encouraging all employees to be aware of their own behaviour and resource consumption. This could involve small things such as removing empty bottles from the tables and remembering to order new items when you take the last of something. All the things that combine to make our workplace a pleasant place to be, Kirsten says. In 2008, focus will be on handling stress signals and reducing resource consumption. Washing down without backache It is a demanding job to empty and wash down up to 150 long-necked graduated flasks in one day, especially if you have to work in a cramped position. That was the case before, but the three recently equipped fume cupboards in building Y have made the job much easier. The sink, tap and solvent outlet have been moved to the front of the cupboard and at the bottom of the sink a foot pedal operated hose has been installed. Previously, we had to hit the opening of the flask with the jet stream from the tap, which is high precision work. Now, all we have to do is place the flask upside down over the hose and wash it by pressing the pedal. It is faster and we avoid standing in an uncomfortable working posture, says Laboratory Technician Klaus Kokholm Petersen of Quality Solid Bulk Production. Lab. Technician Klaus Kokholm Petersen and his colleagues now have a much better work position. Page 8 of 12 Health, Safety & Environment Report 2007, Valby, Denmark www.lundbeck.com/sustainability
