HS&E and Lean hit it off How do you best attract constant attention to both HS&E and Lean? At Pharmaceutical Production Support they are endeavouring to link everything together and it seems like the obvious thing to do. It is natural to take both areas into consideration when you review everything. If a cardboard box lies randomly about the floor, this is in conflict with the 6S principle of Lean and forms a hazard to the working environment, says HS&E representative Heidi Simonsen. Thus, in future, they are going to link together the 6S rounds and the HS&E rounds, and the plan is to involve all 18 employees within the department, one after the other. This is not standard procedure, but in our opinion it is only natural to engage as many eyes as possible. Safety is everybodys responsibility and different people discover different things. This is also a legitimate way to draw attention to errors without stepping on anyones toes, says Heidi. The HS&E action plans are a standing item on the agenda at the monthly standing staff meetings, and this has caught the attention of everybody, says Head of Department Frank Høien Lendal. Up to now, we have focused on the goals, but we are not as good at following up on the action plans. Now we have included everything concerning HS&E in one single form, which hangs in the hallway outside our conference room so that everybody is reminded of it, says Frank. Jette Møller Larsen used the tool developed by Tasin Dudus (left) to calculate that an automatic dishwasher would pay off. Feasibility study of coffee mugs Is it worthwhile to buy an automatic dishwasher and replace the disposable cups by ceramic mugs? Jette Møller Larsen from IT has tried, and the answer is yes. It is not only cheaper; it also gives our service employees up to 30 minutes for other tasks, and resources are saved in terms of manufacturing disposable cups and transportation. Previously, IT used a lot of disposable cups and glasses a total of about 3,000 pieces each month. They had to be ordered and distributed and, once they had been used, the service employees spent a considerable amount of time disposing of cups, glasses and packing material, says Jette. After the automatic dishwasher was installed, monthly consumption of disposable tableware has been reduced by 700 glasses and 80 cups. The action plan for the HS&E work is studied by Heidi Simonsen and Frank Høien Lendal. The consumption of glasses is relatively higher because many people prefer to drink their coffee in glasses. We save DKK 2,200 each month, and in less than one year we will have recovered our expenses, so it pays off financially and in terms of protecting the environment, says Jette. The description of the dishwasher as a business case has come into existence by means of a tool developed by Corp. HS&E. With this tool you can calculate the consequences of an investment before making it. The tool, which is available through the HS&E portal on BrainWeb, is an easy to use spreadsheet. It shows how many parameters are included in any given investment. It focuses not only on the financial aspects, but also on the consequences for the environment and the working environment. And it can be used for any kind of investment, both the major investments and the small ones, says Section Leader Tasin Dudus of Corp.
