2007 successes and challenges Quick solutions are costly, says Lars E. Mitens. Saving time and money The baton in the relay race a safety helmet has helped to render the HS&E efforts more visible. It may be costly to postpone working environment considerations until the new building is ready to be occupied or the machine has been installed. Therefore, Corp. HS&E is involved as early in the process as possible when a new project is launched in Engineering. When we launch new projects, we involve both Corp. HS&E and the HS&E representative from the beginning. For example, if the most recent workplace assessment highlighted any issues relevant in connection with the project, we take such issues into consideration, says Lars E. Mitens, Divisional Director in Engineering & Technical Operations. Its all about doing things right the first time. Quick solutions are costly, and we have experienced projects in which we subsequently had to solve problems that might have been avoided altogether. For example, we have once replaced a machine that, after it was installed, turned out to involve many lifts and repetitive work processes. If we had considered such issues early in the process, we could have taken them into account. Each year, we undertake about 40 engineering projects and a large number of renovation tasks at Valby. We assess the HS&E risks in each project, covering the construction phase and the completed building or facility. In 2007, the risk assessment was used in renovating the central heating station and in a major ventilation project. Relay race generated positive results How do you keep the zest alive when it comes to achieving the HS&E goals for the year? Operations and Maintenance chose to organise the hunt as a relay race between the four Section Leaders and their Team Leaders and that paid off. The relay race is a good and funny way to render visible the work and inspire each other. Everybody likes to brag a little when good results have been achieved, says Section Leader Jens Herne Nielsen. His area, CTS, which controls the ventilation system has reaped great benefits. On the working environment side, so-called strain plans for each employee have been introduced to avoid stress. The plans, invented by Jens, are to ensure that no employee has more duties assigned than he has time to perform. On the environment side, controlling the supply systems plays a major role when we talk energy savings, and we have taken a look at our regulation of the air humidity in the production department, among other places. We dehumidify in the summer and humidify in the winter. It costs a lot of money, and we have calculated that we may save up to DKK 100,000 a year on our electricity bill on a medium-size system if we allow the air humidity to stay in a range between 45 and 60 per cent instead of keeping an absolute value of 50 per cent. In the last five years, we have introduced this control framework across a number of new systems, and in 2008 we will review all systems to make sure that they stay within the limits, says Jens. Utility Supply Efficiency also implemented energy savings initiatives, says Team Leader Leon Svendborg Poulsen. Reinsulation of the heating stations has generated savings of DKK 200,000 in heat consumption, while repairing of leaks in the compressed air system cut the electricity bill by DKK 100,000. A simple adjustment of the main cooling systems so that they operate separately will result in annual electricity savings of at least DKK 150,000, and an adjustment of the heating systems will result in additional savings of DKK 400,000 each year. In 2008, the GMP-regulated areas are next. Identifying savings here calls for more creative ideas as we have to comply with the special GMP requirements. But I am confident that we can achieve energy savings here as well, and thereby reduce our CO2 emission, says Leon.
