Accident prevention Reduction in number of accidents How does a focused effort help to prevent accidents from re-occurring? We recorded a positive development in the number of accidents and environmental accidents in 2007, says HS&E advisor Lise Simonsen of Corp. HS&E. For a number of years, we have focused on preventing accidents and environmental incidents by concentrating on preventing nearmisses, and our efforts appear to have had the intended effect. The number of lost-time accidents is down, and we are registering a steadily increasing number of near-misses and environmental incidents. As a new feature, within 12 months after a preventive action has been initiated, we must evaluate whether the efforts have had the intended effect. Before completing this evaluation, an accident or near-miss cannot be closed in the accident database. This is an important addition to our concept of prevention. It may turn out that a preventive measure did not have the intended effect, and in that case it is important that we take a look at the analysis to identify a new and better prevention initiative, Lise says. In 2007, a number of analysis and accident prevention courses were held for the HS&E organisation. A thorough analysis of an accident is pivotal for efficient prevention. These courses will also be offered in 2008. When working at the acid fume cupboards, personal protection equipment is required, as demonstrated by Berit Bergstein. HS&E representative Anne-Lise Jensen is seen to the left. Mask, visor and apron Employees who use the acid fume cupboards in Quality Solid Bulk Production are well equipped for the job literally speaking. Since one of their colleagues met with an accident when the ventilation system broke down, a mask, visor and apron have been mandatory for everyone working at the cupboard. The accident occurred while the employee was using a spray with concentrated sulphuric acid. Due to ventilation failure, some of the acid touched her face, says Berit Bergstein, an HS&E representative. Following advice from the Poison Control Hotline at Bispebjerg Hospital, the employees drank a lot of liquid and went home. She soon recovered and went back to work already the next day. Investigating the cause of the accident, we discovered that the motor for the ventilation system was too small, Berit says. A new and larger motor has now been installed to run the ventilation at all four acid fume cupboards in the building. Accidents and incidents 2003 Lost-time accidents Work-related accidents with no time loss Registered work-related near-misses Frequency of accidents *) Environmental incidents Environmental near-misses *) Number of lost-time accidents per million hours of work 2004 21 63 2005 13 76 75 5 4 3 2006 17 58 93 6,06 1 4 2007 11 17 115 3,8 1 9 13 46 Eleven lost-time accidents were recorded in 2007, the lowest figure for five years and 35% lower than in 2006. The frequency of accidents fell 37 per cent, and the number of near-misses and environmental incidents rose relative to 2006. Thus, the targets for 2007 of reducing the frequency of accidents and recording at least seven near-misses per registered lost-time accident were accomplished.
